If the click is dying, what’s replacing it?

September 22, 2026 By: FMI Staff

SEO and AEO savvy marketers are turning to JSON-LD schema, a short piece of code that summarizes a page’s key info.

Search engines have used it for years to rank pages for a human to click, but AI uses it differently.

When you ask an AI agent a question, it sends out crawlers to find the answer. Reading a full article costs tokens and time, so the agent reaches for a coded summary instead.

Right now, most agents stop at reading and citing. Going further, like signing up for an account or completing a purchase, takes more trust. It needs verified identity, payment authorization, and checkout protocols that an agent can actually execute.

That infrastructure is only just being built, and it’s only a matter of time until chatbots can “add to cart” or “unsubscribe”.

Marketers investing in JSON-LD schema today aren’t just optimizing for search. They’re building the storefront AI agents will walk into first.

Is your website ready for AI visitors?
