Virtual reality pioneer, Louis Rosenberg, is both excited and terrified of the Metaverse. In this impressive video, Rosenberg outlines a possible future where corporations/brands will have tremendous amounts of personal information on consumers to use for marketing. In the Metaverse, brands will know where you go, who you meet, even what content your gaze focuses on. With that information, brands will be able to cater specific advertising messages to the individual. Potentially, an avatar will appear that can read emotions and sell to you directly based on how you are feeling in the moment. Perhaps we won’t even know the Metaverse avatar is a bot trained to sell to us. It’s a dystopian future, and Rosenberg argues convincingly the time for regulation is NOW.
