Virtual Clothing Try-On

The ongoing pandemic is increasing brands usage of ‘Virtual try-ons’.  Virtual try-ons make use of virtual and augmented reality to offer an immersive experience to the consumer.  A buyer can choose the required size, color and type of the outfit and try it on themselves or their virtual avatar. No visit to the physical store is required. Techniques involve combining 3D body scanning with AR technology.  It’s a powerful combination that has the potential to revolutionize the fashion store experience.

Different methods of the ‘virtual try-on’ are being utilized. Customers may use 3D scanners to construct Avatars of themselves, which they can then dress in select clothing. If one visits a physical store, customers can try on garments without undressing through the use of magic mirrors.

Advantages of this technology include reducing returns and improving personalization. But, challenges exist including the fact that customers can’t actually touch the items. Will this technology thrive in the future? These topics are discussed in this thoughtful article by Thalia Barrera.
